Can you believe that we have passed the exciting days with the Sumatra English Olympiad (SEO) ? It doesn't feel that the big event of the English education study program that all Sumatran students and students have been waiting for is over! The month of April we were filled with various kinds of excitement from various olympiad competitions and events displayed by the Sumatra English Olympiad (SEO), it was spectacular! Leaving precious moments and stories for all of us and making us impatient to look forward to what surprises will be in the next Olympiad!

What is Sumatra English Olympiad (SEO) ?

The Sumatra English Olympiad (SEO) is an annual Olympiad organized by students of English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education Universitas Riau. In 2024, SEO was held again under the theme "Your Brightest Future Starts Here!" and took place from April 21st to 27th, 2024, which was held offline in the M. Diah building and several locations within the FKIP environment at Universitas Riau with several competitions held online. And English Education Department Students of Universitas Riau are proud to announce that this English Olympiad attracted thousands of participants from all levels ranging from Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High School, Senior High School, University students and the general throughout Sumatra and even Indonesia. The aim of the Olympiad is to increase the love of the English, as well as to foster and develop competent English language skills for the participants. This Olympiad presents various competition fields such as Singing Contest, Western Cosplay, Spelling Bee, Scramble Words, Rank 1, Scrabble, English Smart, Quiz, TOEFL, Speech Junior High School, Speech Senior High School, Speech Varsity, Storytelling Junior High School, Storytelling Senior High School, 3D Wallnews, Acoustic, Debate, Essay, and Poster.

Day One at the Sumatra English Olympiad: Grand Opening for Our Brigthest Future

On April 21st, 2024, the first day of the Sumatra English Olympiad began with the Opening Ceremony. It took place from 08.00 AM until it finished. In the opening ceremony, Tito Castro Siagian as the Chief Executive of SEO 2024, delivered his opening speech, followed by Bintang Adri Darmawan as the Chairman of ESA FKIP Universitas Riau 2023/2024, then Dr. Erni, S.Pd, M.Hum. as the Coordinator of the English Education Study Program and Ria Novianti, S. Psi, M. Pd. as the representative of the Dean of FKIP Universitas Riau also gave great hopes for the implementation of SEO to run smoothly until the end. The event ended with the beating of a gong that marked the official opening of SEO 2024. On that day there were also four competitions held. First, a Debate Seminar was held in the Senate room on the second floor of the FKIP building Universitas Riau. This was followed by the Debate competition held in the Senate and D4, D5, D6, D7, and D8 rooms of the FKIP building Universitas Riau. In addition, there was a Rank 1 competition for Junior High School and Senior High School students held in the Microteaching room. And the last, TOEFL competition which took place in the UPT Bahasa room of Universitas Riau.

Day Two at the Sumatra English Olympiad: A Showcase of Talent and Tenacity

On April 22nd, 2024, the second day of the Sumatra English Olympiad, there were 5 competitions held. First was the continuation of the Debate competition, which started from the quarter-final, until semi-final. Additionally, the Quiz competition was held in the M. Diah building Universitas Riau, There was also the Scrabble competition for Junior High School students held in the Microteaching room of Universitas Riau. Participants were seen focusing intensely on finding the right words. Moreover, the 3D Wallnews competition took place on the Pentas Seni 2 PBSI of the FKIP Universitas Riau. Participants creatively prepared their wallnews. Furthermore, there was the Speech Junior High School competition held in H1 room FKIP Universitas Riau, where participants showcased their speech skills.

Day Three at the Sumatra English Olympiad: Culmination and Continuation of Our Ambition

On April 23rd, 2024, the third day of the Sumatra English Olympiad took place with 5 competitions. The final Debate competition and the Winner Announcement were held at the M. Diah building Universitas Riau. Then, there was the Storytelling Junior High School competition held at D4 FKIP Universitas Riau, where participants showcased their storytelling abilities. Then the continuation of the Quiz competition held at the M. Diah building Universitas Riau, starting with session 2, that is a crossword puzzle. Furthermore, the Scrabble Senior High School competition took place in the Microteaching building FKIP Universitas Riau, with rounds 1-4 held in the morning and round 5 (top 8) to round 7 (final top 4) starting in the afternoon. There was also the continuation of the Speech Junior High School competition held in H1 room FKIP Universitas Riau.

Day Four at the Sumatra English Olympiad: Continued Excellence in Performance

On April 24th, 2024, the fourth day of the Sumatra English Olympiad saw the continuation of 4 competitions. The Storytelling Senior High School competition was held in D4 room FKIP Universitas Riau, where participants competed to showcase their storytelling skills. Then, there was the Scramble Words competition held in D6 room FKIP Universitas Riau. Furthermore, the Quiz competition entered its final round, with participants competing to achieve the top score. Then there was the Speech Varsity competition held in the English Laboratory FKIP Universitas Riau.

Day Five at the Sumatra English Olympiad: Showcasing Infinite Talent and Creativity

On April 25th, 2024, the fifth day of the Sumatra English Olympiad featured 5 competitions. The Speech Senior High School competition took place in the Microteaching room Universitas Riau. Then, there was the English Smart competition held in D6 room FKIP Universitas Riau. Additionally, there was the Spelling Bee competition held in D4 room FKIP Universitas Riau. Furthermore, the Western Cosplay competition took place in the M. Diah building Universitas Riau, showcasing various Hollywood-themed cosplays and performances from scenes of Hollywood movies. And there was the Speech Varsity competition, which entered its final round.

Day Six at the Sumatra English Olympiad: Harmony and Talent Take the Spotlight

On April 26th, 2024, the sixth day of the Sumatra English Olympiad featured 3 competitions. The Acoustic competition took place in the M. Diah building FKIP Universitas Riau. The building was filled with spectators eager to witness the acoustic teams perform. Then, there was the Singing Contest held in the Microteaching room FKIP Universitas Riau, where participants showcased their best voices to the judging panel and there was the final round of the Spelling Bee competition.

Day Seven at the Sumatra English Olympiad: Reaching the Pinnacle at the Closing Ceremony

On April 27th, 2024, the Sumatran English Olympiad reached the peak of the closing ceremony. At this closing ceremony, the closing speech was also delivered by Tito Castro Siagian as the Chief Executive of SEO 2024, followed by Bintang Adri Darmawan as the Chairman of ESA FKIP Riau University 2023/2024, then Dr. Erni, S.Pd, M.Hum. as the Coordinator of the English Education Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau and Ria Novianti, S. Psi, M.Hum. as the representative of the Dean of FKIP Universitas Riau. There was also a spectacular flash mob performance from English Education Department students that was able to enliven the atmosphere to be more festive in the M. Diah building Universitas Riau. Then the event continued with the announcement of the winners and the handover of certificates and prizes to the winners of each competition contained in SEO 2024.

This is an overview of the implementation of the Sumatra English Olympiad. We congratulate all the winners and thank all the participants who have also successfully demonstrated their English Language competency through this olympiad. Hopefully the initial aim of holding this olympiad can be felt by all participants and also the committee from SEO 2024.
