It is generally avoided in formal contexts like academic writing, legal documents, and professional workplace communication, as it may appear unprofessional or cause misunderstanding.

Idioms can be used in both spoken and written language, depending on the context. While they are acceptable in informal and semi-formal communication, their use in formal writing should be carefully considered to ensure clarity and appropriateness for the audience.

Examples of Slang and Idioms

Examples of slang include:

  • Cool, meaning something good or impressive

  • Ghosting, meaning suddenly cutting off communication

  • Flex, meaning showing off

Examples of idioms include:

  • Break the ice, meaning to initiate conversation in a social situation

  • Hit the nail on the head, meaning to be exactly right

  • Once in a blue moon, meaning something that happens very rarely
